In a daring heist, the regal Palace of Olu of Ogunmakin town, nestled within the Obafemi-Owode local government area of Ogun state, fell prey to audacious thieves.
Their ill-gotten loot consisted of the revered crown and the staff of office belonging to the late monarch, Oba James Sodiya, who had passed away just two months ago, on a fateful Thursday, October 12.
The audacious act was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Omolola Odutola,
during a press briefing in Abeokuta on Saturday.
In a twist of justice, the police swiftly apprehended three suspects associated with the audacious heist.
Describing the desecration of the royal artifacts as an abomination, Odutola detailed the police’s efforts.
She said, “On the 12th of October 2023, an intelligence report reached us from the late Ogunmakin’s Royal Palace, indicating that three individuals—Amusa Kazeem, Oke Oladipupo, and Johnson Oluwole—had conspired to steal the royal crown and the staff of office, just two months after the demise of the king.”
She revealed that the audacious thieves gained access to the residence at approximately 2000 hours, where the late king’s treasured possessions were safeguarded.
They managed to obtain the key from the custodian and successfully absconded with the royal crown and the staff of office, an act deemed sacrilegious.
Swiftly, upon receiving the distressing news, the police mobilized their resources and managed to recover the stolen royal crown from the premises of one Kazeem Amusan.
However, the staff of office remains elusive, despite ongoing intensive efforts.
The suspects are currently in police custody, undergoing thorough interrogation as part of the investigative process.
In an earnest plea, the commissioner of police, Abiodun Alamutu, beseeches the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the recovery of the staff of office, ensuring the restoration of this important symbol of traditional authority.
