The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced that the Federal Government is set to increase the monthly allowance of Corps members.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the potential hike will be implemented once the ongoing negotiations on the new minimum wage are concluded.
Ahmed made this announcement while addressing 2,762 Corps members of Batch B, Stream One, at the Ogun State NYSC Orientation Camp in Sagamu on Saturday.
In his address, Ahmed stressed the importance of adhering to camp rules, specifically warning Corps members against posting camp activities on social media.
He revealed that three Corps members had recently been expelled from the camp for violating this rule.
“Let me also remind you of the camp rules that you are not allowed to post the camp activities online or on social media.
“Three of your colleagues elsewhere were found breaking these rules and posting camp activities on social media, and they have been decamped,” he stated.
Ahmed also highlighted the risks associated with night journeys, urging Corps members to avoid unnecessary travel and to take necessary precautions if travel is unavoidable.
“Night journeys are also not allowed; in fact, unnecessary journeys should be avoided because we have lost many Corps members to such in the past.
We don’t want that again. Even if you must travel, you must have taken your permission and found somewhere to sleep once it is 6 pm,” he cautioned.
Addressing the financial concerns of the Corps members, Ahmed reassured them of the government’s commitment to increasing their allowance in line with the new minimum wage.
“And for your allowance, don’t worry, as soon as the ongoing negotiations on the minimum wage are concluded, you can be so sure that your allowance too will definitely go up.
“There is no way the government will forget you because you are really special,” he assured.
Ahmed praised the military skills displayed by the parade guard and encouraged the youth to consider a career in the military.
He also urged the Corps members to take their security seriously and respect the cultures of the communities they would be posted to for their primary assignments.
“Though the camp has provided water-tight security, the onus also rests on the Corps members not to go to where they are not supposed to be so as not to endanger themselves,” he advised.
To support the Corps members during their orientation, Ahmed donated four cows for their feeding, which was met with loud cheers from the attendees.
Welcoming the DG, the Ogun State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, highlighted the measures taken to ensure the health and well-being of the Corps members, including the provision of handwashing stations to prevent cholera outbreaks.
She noted that the camp had 2,762 Corps members, comprising 922 males and 1,423 females, who have actively participated in all camp programmes, especially the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development initiative aimed at equipping them with job creation skills.
Nasamu also identified some needs of the orientation camp, such as additional boreholes, water reservoirs, bunks, mattresses, a functional ambulance, and a proper food store, to improve the living conditions of the Corps members.
