In a recent development, three domestic workers found themselves in front of the Lugbe Grade I Area Court in Abuja, facing charges of alleged theft amounting to $74,400 from their employer.
The defendants, namely Omale Joy (19), Ogbe Mururat (22), and Agres Kazashim, have been accused of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and theft.
During the arraignment, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Stanley Aforaku, disclosed that the accused individuals, in collaboration with Franca Ibrahim, who is currently at large, had been hired to fulfill cleaning and nanny duties by Ahmed Wali, the complainant’s father-in-law.
The complainant, identified as Mr. Taofees Salman, brought the matter to the attention of the Asokoro Police Station on August 18.
According to Aforaku, the complainant alleged that the defendants had conspired to pilfer $74,400 from Wali’s bedroom.
The subsequent investigation yielded results, revealing that $900 and N12,000 had been recovered from Joy. Further inquiries uncovered a trail of the stolen funds leading to Joy’s UBA account.
However, in a surprising twist, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges levied against them. In response, the presiding Judge Aliyu Kagarko granted each of the defendants bail in the amount of N1 million, contingent upon providing a surety who also resides within the jurisdiction of the court and possesses property in Asokoro.
The case’s next steps have been scheduled, with proceedings set to resume on August 29.
