Three persons were arraigned on Monday, before a magistrate’s court in the Isabo area of Abeokuta over an alleged assault on a medical doctor, Alexander Onochie, at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro.
The incident, which took place last Friday, involved James Akode (57), Lekan Ajeigbe (35), and Rilwan Roheem (33).
The trio appeared before Magistrate Mrs. D.O. Ogunbowale, facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and unlawful damage to property.
According to the prosecution counsel, ASP Matthew Famuyiwa, the accused committed the offence on May 17 at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Aro, Abeokuta.
Famuyiwa detailed that the defendants, who are relatives of a patient seeking treatment at the hospital, assaulted Dr. Onochie while he was performing his duties.
The altercation began when Akode entered the doctor’s office, pleading for expedited care for his sick sibling.
Dr. Onochie, attending to another emergency patient at the time, asked Akode to be patient. After finishing with the initial patient, the doctor called for the next one, but no one responded.
Stepping out of his office to investigate, Dr. Onochie found the waiting room empty. As he exited the building, he encountered the three men, along with others, who then conspired to assault him. In the course of the attack, the defendants also damaged Dr. Onochie’s Toyota Camry, breaking the side mirror, valued at N20,000, and damaging the car bumper, whose repair cost remains undetermined.
ASP Famuyiwa highlighted that the defendants’ actions posed a potential risk of causing a breach of peace within the hospital environment.
The offences they are charged with contravene sections 516, 351, 451, and 249 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Following the arraignment, Magistrate Ogunbowale granted the defendants bail, setting the sum at N200,000 each.
Additionally, each defendant must provide two sureties of the same amount, who must be registered bondmen with the Ogun State Judiciary.
The case has been adjourned until June 4 for further hearings.
