Three sisters from the Yalwan Rugu-Rugu community in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State have drowned after the canoe conveying them capsized on Tiga Dam.
The victims, identified as Murjanatu, Atikatu and Bilkisu, popularly known as Amira, reportedly drowned when the canoe overturned at about 2pm on Saturday while sailing on the dam.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning, with residents and relatives grieving the loss of the three siblings.
The Chairperson of Tudun Wada Local Government Area, Sa’adatu Salisu Soja, described the incident as a painful and devastating loss.
In a condolence message issued on Sunday, Soja commiserated with the families of the deceased and the people of Yalwan Rugu-Rugu, while praying for strength for them to cope with the tragedy.
She said, “We share the pain of the bereaved family and pray that Almighty Allah forgives the deceased, grants them Aljannatul Firdaus, and gives their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.”
The council chairperson also prayed for divine protection and urged that such a tragedy should not recur.
However, the Kano State Fire Service said it had yet to receive an official report of the drowning incident as of Sunday.
The spokesperson for the agency, Saminu Abdullahi, said the Fire Service only learnt of the tragedy through media reports and the condolence message issued by the local government chairperson.
“We have not received the report officially. We only saw it in the news and in the condolence message released by the Chairperson of Tudun Wada,” Abdullahi said.
The development has again raised concerns over safety measures for residents who use canoes to navigate waterways, particularly around major dams and other water bodies.
