President Bola Tinubu has announced that passengers can enjoy free rides on the newly commissioned Abuja Rail Transport System until December 31.
The move was aimed at easing transportation challenges and fostering goodwill among residents.
The announcement came on Wednesday during the inauguration of the metro rail project in Abuja, a key event marking President Tinubu’s one year in office.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several high-profile officials, including FCT Minister Nysom Wike.
Initially, Minister Wike announced that the Abuja light rail would offer free rides for two months starting from Tuesday.
However, in a spirited appeal, President Tinubu urged the minister to extend this period until the end of the year, highlighting the importance of providing the public with hope and reasons to celebrate during these challenging times.
“Our dear landlord and his team, I heard you saying two months free ride. I appeal to you to make it till the end of the year.
Since today you’re not going to charge me, that will give the people hope and reasons to celebrate,” President Tinubu stated.
This extension is expected to benefit thousands of commuters in Abuja, easing the burden of transportation costs and encouraging greater use of public transit.
The Abuja Metro, designed to provide efficient and reliable transportation, is seen as a pivotal development in the city’s infrastructure.
