In a remarkable turn of events, President Bola Tinubu has displayed magnanimity by waiving the ‘No Work, No Pay’ order that had been instituted against the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
The doctors had embarked on a 17-day industrial strike starting July 26 due to unmet demands, prompting the government to impose the contentious order on August 1.
Following extensive negotiations between NARD leadership and government representatives, the resident doctors decided to call off their strike on August 12.
A breakthrough came on Friday when presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale announced that President Tinubu had invoked the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy to grant the waiver.
The statement issued by Ngelale affirmed the decision, stating, “Invoking the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy, President Bola Tinubu has approved the waiver of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ order that was instituted against striking members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on August 1, 2023, following the commencement of their industrial action, which began on July 26, 2023.”
This generous gesture from President Tinubu will enable the affected doctors to finally receive their salaries that had been withheld during the 17-day strike.
The statement went on to explain, “After several constructive engagements between the Federal Government and NARD, the Resident Doctors called off their strike on August 12, 2023.
The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation was directed to withhold all salaries accrued by striking NARD members during the 17 days of their strike action.”
In light of the fruitful deliberations and the faithfulness in implementing the agreed-upon terms, President Tinubu directed the exceptional last waiver of the ‘No Work, No Pay’ Order on Resident Doctors.
This decision marks a significant step towards resolving the impasse and restoring harmony within the healthcare sector, benefitting both the doctors and the patients they serve.
