President Bola Tinubu has said he will not attend every campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing the need to focus on governance, meet the country’s financial obligations and attract long-term investments.
The President stated this on Wednesday in Abuja while inaugurating the APC Presidential Campaign Council, directing members to take charge of the party’s mobilisation activities across the country while he attends to pressing national issues.
Tinubu said the demands of electioneering must not distract him from his responsibilities as President, stressing that Nigeria needed his attention at a critical time.
“You’ve warned me not to allow the rigour of the campaign to distract me from governance. I hear you. I am in full agreement with your decision. Nigeria needs more attention now,” he said.
Explaining his decision to limit his participation in campaign activities, the President told members of the council that he could not accompany them to every campaign event, pointing to the country’s financial commitments.
“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you, we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” Tinubu said.
He also underscored the need to attract investors who would establish sustainable businesses and commit their resources to Nigeria’s long-term economic development.
“We want those investors to come in, be here to stay, to invest for the future of our children,” he added.
Despite his planned limited presence at campaign rallies, Tinubu assured Nigerians that he would make time to address them directly while the campaign council coordinated mobilisation efforts across states and local government areas.
The President described the inauguration of the council as more than the establishment of a political structure, saying it represented a renewed commitment to Nigerians and the responsibilities entrusted to the APC as the governing party.
“We have not gathered merely to inaugurate a council. We have gathered to renew a covenant. A covenant with Nigerian people and the historic responsibility they have entrusted to us as Nigeria’s governing party,” he said.
Tinubu charged members of the council to communicate his administration’s policies, achievements and vision to voters, expressing confidence that the party would secure victory in the 2027 elections.
He urged party leaders and members to take the campaign to every ward in the country, stressing that the success of the council would ultimately be measured by votes delivered at the polls.
“No one gets credit for an incomplete assignment. So, until you deliver the next election, until you deliver your wards, until you deliver the votes, before we can say thank you,” he said.
The President also congratulated APC members on the successful completion of the party’s congresses, recalling predictions that the exercise would trigger a major internal crisis.
According to him, the party had overcome the anticipated challenges and completed the process, with members participating from the ward level to the national leadership.
“They said there will be implosion. We passed through it. We did not fail. You didn’t let us down. We got here together,” he said.
Tinubu thanked party members for their support during the previous election and expressed confidence in their ability to repeat the feat in 2027.
He urged the campaign council to remain committed to the task ahead, assuring members that their efforts would be recognised if they delivered electoral victory for the party.
“I celebrate you. I celebrate you, no doubt about that. Nigeria will continue to celebrate you. You will see the joy of this victory. You will share in the joy,” the President said.
The inauguration comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the APC seeking to consolidate its position and secure another presidential mandate for Tinubu.
