President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive action in response to ongoing political turmoil in Rivers state by nominating retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state administrator.
This move follows Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers due to persistent instability.
Ibas, who previously served as Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 and later as Ambassador to Ghana, has been tasked with overseeing the affairs of Rivers state for a minimum of six months.
Tinubu’s intervention also includes the suspension of the state governor, deputy governor, and members of the state assembly.
In a televised address, President Tinubu outlined the responsibilities of the administrator, emphasizing that Ibas will manage the state without enacting new laws but will have the authority to issue regulations, contingent upon approval by the Federal Executive Council and presidential promulgation.
“The administrator will not make any new laws. He will, however, be free to formulate regulations as may be found necessary to do his job, but such regulations will need to be considered and approved by the Federal Executive Council and promulgated by the president for the state,” Tinubu stated.
Despite the executive measures, Tinubu assured that the judiciary in Rivers state would continue its constitutional duties unaffected.
He underscored that the declaration of the state of emergency and the appointment of an administrator had been officially published in the federal gazette and forwarded to the National Assembly as mandated by the constitution.
Tinubu concluded his address with an appeal for constitutional adherence among all political stakeholders in Rivers state and across Nigeria, expressing hope that these interventions would foster peace and stability in the troubled region.
