Tinubu’s Wife Decries Alarming  School Dropout Rate

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the Wife of the President, has raised the  alarm over the high  rate of school dropout among Nigerian children, particularly girls. 

Speaking during the turning-of-sod ceremony of the Alternative High School for Girls in Osogbo, Osun State, Senator Tinubu expressed her deep concern and desire to see young girls and women who dropped out of school due to various reasons return to education.

Senator Tinubu highlighted the importance of providing a second chance for girls who had to leave school due to unplanned pregnancies, cultural barriers, or financial constraints. 

She reminisced about her initiative to establish an Alternative High School for Girls in Lagos State during her husband’s tenure as Governor, a vision that is still operational to date.

She said, “I envisioned and introduced the idea for the establishment of an Alternative High School for Girls, a vision which was accepted and utilised by the Lagos State Ministry of Education in 2007 when my husband was the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and this particular school still runs till date.

“My motivation as an educationist and life long teacher stemmed from the desire to see young girls and women who dropped out of school due to unplanned pregnancies, cultural barriers, economic or financial reasons and many more, have a second chance to complete high school, acquire higher education and valuable life skills, to enable them to reach their full potential in life.”

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, elaborated on the features of the proposed school. It will offer workshops for entrepreneurial training in vocational trades such as fashion design, home economics, and catering. 

He added that  the school will have a well-equipped laboratory for digital literacy training and access to digital resources.

Governor Ademola Adeleke pledged his support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the role of women in the transformation of Osun State. 

He commended the President’s wife for her dedication to education and ensuring that women are at the forefront of development initiatives.

He added that the Alternative High School for Girls aims not only to provide education but also to create a conducive environment for mothers with young children.

He said  with facilities like a nursery play area and a sickbay, the school intends to support both the educational journey of women and the early development of their children.
