A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and renowned philanthropist, Chief Toyin Amuzu, has called on the Nigerian government to address the soaring prices of petroleum products by subsidising essential needs to revitalize the country’s economy.
In a recent statement, Chief Amuzu expressed concern over the increasing hardship faced by Nigerians following the removal of fuel subsidies.
He emphasized that government intervention is crucial to mitigate the economic strain on citizens and to create a conducive environment for businesses to flourish.
Amuzu’s remarks came in response to President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to use funds earmarked for the Federation Account to cover fuel subsidy costs.
He argued that the government’s role in providing subsidies is fundamental to safeguarding the well-being of the population and spurring economic growth.
“The government must take decisive action to drive the economy and protect the citizens.
“ Nigerians are currently suffering due to the rising cost of living, which has been exacerbated by the fuel subsidy removal.
“This has had a ripple effect, driving up the prices of food and other essentials,” Amuzu stated.
He further advocated for subsidies on electricity, fuel, healthcare, as well as the provision of grants and loans to stimulate business activities.
According to him, such measures are vital for ensuring that businesses and individuals prosper, which in turn would generate revenue through taxation.
“It is only when businesses and people do well that they can be taxed. Any responsible government, whether at the federal, state, or local level, must intentionally create an environment where the people’s efforts can enhance both the micro and macro economies of the nation,” Amuzu added.
The Egba traditional chief also underscored the importance of harnessing Nigeria’s youth and natural resources to drive national development.
He asserted that Nigerians must take ownership of the country’s progress, as only Nigerians can truly develop Nigeria.
Amuzu also criticised the persistent issues with electricity supply and fuel availability, noting that no meaningful development can occur without these essential services.
He urged the government to address the nation’s challenges directly, rather than merely paying lip service, to ensure that tangible progress is made
