A tragic accident has claimed the lives of four Catholic seminarians and left nine others injured at the Obudu Ranch Resort in Cross River State.

The incident occurred on Saturday at the Ikwette community, located at the base of the Obudu Ranch hill. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident, involving a vehicle carrying thirteen seminarians, was likely caused by brake failure.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, Mr Nsa Gill, the seminarians were on a tour of the resort and were being led by a Reverend Father when the crash happened.

“They had finished their tour of the ranch and encountered the unfortunate incident at the bottom hill community, outside the ranch premises,” Gill stated.

The victims, who were from the Enugu Catholic Diocese, had travelled to the tourist destination as part of a group excursion.

The Cross River State Government has expressed condolences to the affected families and assured the public of its commitment to improving safety at the resort and across the state.

“Safety is our utmost priority in the Ranch Resort and beyond. We will be reviewing the safety measures in place at the Ranch Resort for every visitor,” the statement read.

Government officials also urged visitors to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to adhere strictly to all safety guidelines while touring the state’s attractions.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected by this tragedy,” the statement concluded.
