In a somber turn of events, the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) in Katsina State has taken decisive action by suspending six students following the untimely demise of one of their peers, Abubakar Nasir-Barda, a 200-level student at the institution.
The university administration revealed this grave decision in a statement made public on Sunday, October 1, 2023, through its spokesperson, Habib Aminu-Umar.
The suspension comes in the wake of the Katsina State Police Command’s announcement of the arrest of these six students in connection with the tragic death of Nasir-Barda.
Aminu-Umar expressed the profound sorrow and concern shared by the university’s Senate, staff, and students over this unfortunate incident.
The altercation that led to the loss of a promising 200-level Computer Science and Information Technology student’s life allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a fellow female student.
The university swiftly responded to the tragedy by forming an interim ad-hoc committee to investigate the matter thoroughly and report developments to the administration.
The preliminary findings, submitted to the university’s management on September 30, indicate that the incident occurred off-campus.
However, the university’s security personnel were quickly dispatched to the scene upon receiving information, preventing further confrontation and facilitating the apprehension of some involved students.
The case has since been handed over to the police, resulting in the arrest of six students, as confirmed by the official police press statement.
The committee’s report recommended that the university invoke section 5.5(a) of the University Academic Policy by suspending all six students involved pending the outcome of the police investigation.
The university’s management has endorsed this recommendation and has subsequently suspended all six students indefinitely.
While the police investigation unfolds, the university’s management remains committed to ensuring that justice is served in this tragic incident, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of truth and accountability.
