In a shocking incident that unfolded in the Kobiti area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, a dispute over an unpaid debt spiraled into a horrifying tragedy as Wasiu Oyekan reportedly beat his neighbour, Ibrahim Lateef, to death over a sum of N4,500.
The incident, which transpired near the Kobiti Central Mosque, shook the local community to its core.
The dispute arose from an incident that occurred back in August when Oyekan accused the deceased’s son and another boy of damaging his PlayStation video game. Seeking compensation for the damages,
Oyekan demanded a total of N9,000 for the repairs.
The father of the accused boy paid him N4,500 but promised to cover the remainder later.
As time passed and the debt remained unpaid, Oyekan’s frustration led him to take the deceased’s son to the police station on a Sunday.
Lateef, upon discovering his son’s involvement with the police, confronted Oyekan seeking an explanation.
This confrontation took a violent turn as Oyekan allegedly struck Lateef in the neck with a fatal punch, causing him to fall and hit his head on the ground.
The brutal assault led to Lateef’s immediate demise, as he began bleeding from his nose and ears.
An eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the tragic incident and revealed that Oyekan is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
Ibrahim Lateef, also known as Tijuuku, leaves behind his mother, a wife nursing a two-month-old baby girl, other children, and younger siblings.
The news of his untimely death left his aged mother in a state of shock, causing her to faint.
The State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, referring inquiries to the Divisional Police Officer of Oke-Itoku, CSP Hadiza Abu Oganyi, who was handling the case.
DPO Hadiza Abu Oganyi acknowledged the tragic incident and revealed that the case had been transferred to the force headquarters for further investigation.
She noted that the confrontation had erupted when the deceased sought answers from Oyekan about reporting his child to the police.
While the investigation continues, the local community grapples with the senseless loss of a family member, as the memory of the tragic incident in Kobiti lingers in the minds of those who witnessed it.
