Two Fake Medical Practitioners Arraigned For N80m Fraud In Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has dragged  two individuals, Sunday Oladapo and Kafayat Oyelakin, before the Ebutte Meta Magistrate Court in Lagos for allegedly impersonating medical practitioners and defrauding a resident of Jakande Estate, Sola Ajose, of N80 million.

Oladapo and Oyelakin were arraigned on a seven-count charge that includes false representation, conspiracy to commit a felony, and obtaining money under false pretences.

The police prosecutor, Austin Nwabuisi, informed the court that Oladapo falsely claimed to be a practising medical doctor.

He reportedly administered injections to Ajose, diagnosing him with diabetes. The diagnosis was later found to be false when Ajose was flown abroad for treatment due to complications arising from Oladapo’s interventions.

Nwabuisi further explained that Oyelakin conspired with Oladapo to collect the N80 million from Ajose at various intervals.

The fraudulent activities were said to have occurred on October 12, 2023, at the Jakande Estate. Following the incident, both defendants had reportedly been on the run until their recent apprehension.

During the court proceedings, both defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Magistrate Folarin Williams, who presided over the case, granted them bail with stringent conditions. Oladapo was admitted to bail in the sum of N2 million, with two responsible sureties. Similarly, Oyelakin was granted bail in the sum of N1 million, also requiring two responsible sureties.

The magistrate ordered that the defendants’ files be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The court also directed the defendants to be remanded pending the outcome of the legal advice.

The next hearing is scheduled for July 9, 2024, as the court awaits further developments in the case.
