Tragedy struck in Kano State on Tuesday as two intending pilgrims—a mother and her son—lost their lives in a road accident along the Rimin Gado–Kano City road.
The victims, identified as Alkasim Ibrahim Walawa, 48, and his 73-year-old mother, Hadiza Garba, were said to be preparing for the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage when the fatal crash occurred.
The Kano State Pilgrims Welfare Board confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Sulaiman A. Dederi.
According to the board, the deceased were indigenes of Walawa Village in Kabo Local Government Area of the state.
Alkasim was survived by two wives and seven children, while his mother left behind five children.
The board described the incident as painful and heartbreaking, noting that the victims died at a time they were embarking on a significant spiritual journey.
In a joint condolence message, the board and its management expressed deep sorrow over the loss and prayed for the repose of the deceased.
“We pray to Almighty Allah to forgive their shortcomings and grant them eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement read.
The board also sympathised with the bereaved family, urging them to remain steadfast and draw strength during the difficult period.
The accident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major routes across the state, particularly as preparations intensify for this year’s Hajj operations.
