The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed allegations that the death of a nurse at his residence in Ebonyi State was concealed, insisting that the incident was promptly reported to the police and that due process was followed.
Umahi was reacting to reports surrounding the death of Mary Habila, a nurse said to be attached to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital.
Speaking on Sunday while inspecting ongoing construction on the Ebonyi section of the Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Superhighway, the minister described claims of secrecy as false and misleading.
According to him, it was members of the deceased’s family who became worried after she failed to respond, forced open her room, and immediately sought medical help.
He said doctors from the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital attempted to revive Habila after she was rushed to the hospital but she was confirmed dead.
“The family broke the girl’s door, called doctors from DUFUTH, who took her to hospital and did everything to revive her, but failed,” Umahi said.
“The family reported the matter to the police, so where is the secrecy?”
The minister disclosed that he had directed that an autopsy be carried out to determine the cause of death, adding that the procedure would be conducted with the consent of the deceased’s parents.
Umahi said the parents of the late nurse, who are currently in Ebonyi State, would also address journalists on the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s death.
He described Habila as a dedicated staff member of the teaching hospital and expressed confidence that the outcome of the autopsy would clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The minister also announced that he had instructed his lawyers to initiate legal proceedings against individuals circulating what he described as false and defamatory reports about the nurse’s death.
He added that the deceased’s parents were equally considering legal action against those spreading misinformation over the incident.
The police have yet to make public the outcome of any investigation into the nurse’s death as of the time of filing this report.
