The University of Ibadan (UI) has issued formal queries to four student activists, threatening them with expulsion for participating in a peaceful protest against a significant fee hike.
The protest, which took place on May 15, 2024, was in response to the university’s decision to increase fees from N20,000 to N400,000.
The four students targeted for potential disciplinary action are Aduwo Ayedele, a 200-level student from the Department of History, Faculty of Arts, and Olamide Ghadegesin Iyanuoluwa, a 700-level student from the Institute of African Studies.
The other two are Nice Linus and Adeyeye Oluwafemi, the latter whom the university authorities described as an “unknown person.”
In letters addressed to the students, which were issued on May 24, 2024, the university management accused them of “gross misconduct” for disrupting the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected Student Union executives.
The letters, signed by Deputy Registrar (Students) Mr. T.I. Musa, detailed the allegations and demanded a response within 48 hours.
The students were warned that failure to comply would result in an automatic suspension.
The letter stated, “The Student Affairs Division has received a report from the office of the Vice-Chancellor proffered against you, that on Monday, 15 May 2024, yourself and three (3) other students, including an unknown person (Adeyeye Oluwafemi), disrupted the swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Executives of the Student Union.
At this event, Olamide Ghadegesin Iyanuoluwa, Nice Linus, Adeyeye Oluwafemi (an unknown person), and yourself carried placards with scandalous inscriptions against the school fees increment.”
The university’s stance has been met with staunch resistance from the student body.
The activists involved have declared their intention to continue fighting against what they perceive as unjust treatment of economically disadvantaged students.
They argue that their actions are an exercise of their fundamental human rights to protest and express dissent.
