The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has ordered an immediate investigation into a viral video showing the alleged assault of a lecturer following an accusation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The incident reportedly occurred within the university premises on Saturday, August 15, 2026, with footage of the confrontation subsequently circulating widely on social media.
The lecturer, identified as being from the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, was allegedly assaulted amid the controversy surrounding the sexual misconduct allegation.
However, the university management cautioned against drawing conclusions before the facts of the incident are established, stressing that allegations of misconduct must be subjected to due process.
In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the university condemned the alleged assault and described the resort to violence and self-help as unacceptable.
The management said it had activated its administrative processes to conduct a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
It said the investigation would establish the facts and determine the appropriate course of action based on the findings.
The university also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and other inappropriate behaviour.
According to the management, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Anyaehie, has consistently maintained that the dignity, safety and wellbeing of students and staff remain priorities of the institution.
At the same time, the university insisted that no individual or group was permitted to take the law into its own hands within the university environment.
The management said, “No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment.”
UNIZIK said the seriousness of the allegations warranted an investigation capable of establishing the facts objectively and ensuring fairness to all parties.
It added that appropriate administrative procedures had already been activated as the matter remained under review.
The university further pledged to take decisive action against any conduct found to violate its standards on safety, dignity and responsible behaviour.
It said further developments would be communicated to the public as the investigation progresses.
The university’s position comes amid growing public attention to the viral footage, with social media users reacting to the allegations and the subsequent confrontation.
Management, however, urged that the matter be allowed to follow due institutional procedures rather than being determined through social media or acts of violence.
