Veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died after a battle with stage-four cancer.
The 66-year-old actor’s death was confirmed on Sunday by multiple sources, including his daughter, Kaira Taiwo, who was seen mourning her father during an Instagram Live session.
The founder of Best of Nollywood, Seun Oloketuyi, also announced the actor’s death in a social media post, saying, “Taiwo Hassan Ogogo is dead. He finally lost the battle of life.”
The development came barely days after the actor’s daughters, Kaira and Lima Taiwo, appealed for medical assistance for their father, revealing that he was battling stage-four cancer.
The family had on Monday, August 17, 2026, taken to social media to seek medical advice and assistance as they struggled to secure further treatment for the veteran actor.
Kaira disclosed that doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of his condition.
The family subsequently explored other treatment options, including specialised medical procedures and traditional remedies, in a desperate effort to save the actor.
The news of his deteriorating health had triggered an outpouring of concern across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with colleagues, fans and well-wishers rallying support for his treatment.
Among those who reportedly offered assistance was the Ogun State All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Adeola Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, who was said to have provided financial support towards the actor’s medical treatment.
The actor’s death has since triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and associates across the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Saheed Balogun, mourned Ogogo in an Instagram post, describing his death as painful.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful,” Balogun wrote.
Ogogo was one of the most recognisable faces of the Yoruba-language film industry, having built a career spanning several decades.
His strong screen presence, versatility and command of Yoruba-language productions earned him a prominent place among the actors who contributed significantly to the growth and popularity of indigenous Nigerian cinema.
His death represents another major loss to the Nigerian creative industry, coming only days after the public became aware of his deteriorating health and began rallying support for his recovery.
The actor’s illness had also generated widespread concern among his fans, particularly after his daughters revealed the severity of his condition and appealed for assistance.
The latest development has effectively ended the hopes of many Nigerians who had prayed for his recovery.
Ogogo’s death adds to a growing list of prominent Nigerian entertainment figures whose passing has left the industry mourning.
As tributes continue to pour in, attention is expected to shift to his funeral arrangements, with the family expected to make further announcements on the burial.
The veteran actor is survived by his children and other family members.
