In a recent announcement, the Southwest Directors of Veterinary Services have officially confirmed the outbreak of two concerning Transboundary Animal Diseases (TADs) in the region.

The diseases identified are the highly contagious African Swine Fever affecting pigs and Anthrax, which has been detected in herbivores.

Dr. Taiwo Jolaoso, the Chairman of the conference, released a statement underscoring the seriousness of TADs as contagious epidemic diseases that pose a significant threat to livestock.

These diseases have the potential to rapidly spread globally, carrying adverse socio-economic and public health implications.

Dr. Jolaoso emphasized the necessity for international collaboration among different countries to effectively contain these outbreaks.

The release also highlighted crucial steps taken in response to the outbreak. All farms and slaughter slabs affected by the diseases have undergone thorough decontamination and disinfection procedures.

Additionally, efforts are underway to establish protocols for the issuance of movement permits within the region.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the statement noted the intent to heighten public awareness.

The focus will be on informing high-risk groups, including butchers, hunters, animal product processors, marketers, and livestock farmers, to prevent further spread.

The conference issued specific recommendations to mitigate the spread of these diseases.

Pig farmers were strongly advised to enhance their biosecurity measures and avoid stocking their farms.

In the case of Anthrax, stakeholders were urged to refrain from any contact with sick or deceased animals, particularly if blood is present.

Such cases were encouraged to be promptly reported to the nearest veterinary office for immediate attention.
