A socio-political group, Ogun West Initiative, has called for the concession of the Ogun State governorship ticket to Ogun West Senatorial District in 2027, insisting that the move is necessary to correct decades of political marginalization and spur economic development in the region.
The convener of the group, Mr. Bolaji Adeniji, made this assertion during a press briefing on Monday, March 17, 2027, stressing that Ogun West has waited 49 years since the creation of the state without producing a governor, despite its economic contributions.
According to Adeniji, the demand is not based on sentiments or a mere concession but on merit and the growing political consciousness within the district.
He stated that Ogun West now has the required political structure and electoral strategy to present a formidable front in the 2027 election.
“Ogun West has come of age, and the fault lines that have denied us for years are being closed. Our zone is united like never before, and we are building bridges across other districts while also creating the necessary electoral infrastructure for a successful campaign,” he said.
He further emphasized that the political momentum in Ogun West is no longer a sectional agenda but has gained traction across the state, with growing support from stakeholders in Ogun Central and Ogun East.
The Ogun West Initiative decried the disproportionate political power distribution in the state, stating that Ogun East and Central have dominated the governorship position over the years, leaving Ogun West underdeveloped.
Adeniji pointed out that the lack of political power has negatively impacted infrastructural development in the zone, despite its economic potential.
He cited the deterioration of the Ota-Agbara industrial cluster, the neglect of agrarian potentials in Ado-Odo, and the failure to harness the tourism and natural resource advantages in Imeko-Afon and Yewa South.
“It is a well-known fact that development gravitates towards where political power is domiciled.
“Ogun East and Ogun Central are far ahead in development because they have had access to power, while Ogun West continues to lag despite contributing significantly to the state’s economy,” Adeniji stated.
He also lamented the lack of government engagement in harnessing the oil prospects in Tongeji Island and the missed economic opportunities for the region due to inadequate infrastructure and underfunded social services.
The group acknowledged the contributions of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as YAYI, describing him as a political figure whose efforts have rekindled hope in Ogun West.
Adeniji praised his people-focused projects and empowerment initiatives, which he said had helped close developmental gaps in the district.
“The exceptional representation of Senator Adeola has demonstrated that Ogun West has capable individuals who can implement a pan-Ogun State developmental agenda if given the opportunity to serve at the executive level,” he added.
Adeniji called on all stakeholders in Ogun State to support the quest for an Ogun West governor in 2027, emphasizing that the campaign has begun in earnest. He urged political leaders across the state to embrace the demand for equity and fairness.
“We are not under any illusion about the work ahead, but we know that this is a just cause. All men of goodwill must support Ogun West’s aspiration in the interest of fairness and justice. It is time for Ogun State to return to the path of equity,” he said.
The Ogun West Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the political, economic, and social advancement of the Yewa-Awori people, stressing that the 2027 governorship election presents a crucial opportunity to redress historical imbalances in the state.
