The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that President Bola Tinubu is firmly in control of the federal government, stressing that there is no cabal pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Wike made this known on Thursday while delivering the keynote address at the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University Distinguished Personality Lecture in Ile Ife, Osun State.
According to the former Rivers State governor, Tinubu’s leadership has proven to be decisive and transparent, dismissing speculations of hidden hands within the current administration.
“Under Tinubu, there is nothing like cabal. This is a president that is in charge,” Wike stated emphatically.
Drawing from the works of renowned author Chinua Achebe, particularly
The Trouble with Nigeria, Wike echoed the long-standing argument that the nation’s woes stem largely from a failure of leadership.
“This statement, damaging as it may appear, is extremely difficult to controvert. Our leaders have, in the main, emerged through self-serving conspiracies that have little or nothing to do with national interests and development,” he said, lamenting the lack of visionary leadership across successive administrations—both military and civilian.
However, Wike said Tinubu has distinguished himself as the kind of leader Nigeria needs at a critical time in the nation’s history.
“Let me make bold at this juncture to state that today, in our country, we have such a leader in the person of Tinubu,” he declared.
“He has shown in several ways and at different times, a stout commitment to the enthronement of democracy in our country, to the extent of even putting his own life on the line in the process.”
He cited Tinubu’s role in the transformation of Lagos State as a clear demonstration of his leadership capacity and developmental vision.
Wike admitted that Nigeria has suffered underperformance in the past six decades, marked by deepening fault lines and systemic failures.
He said the leader Nigeria needs must be one who can inspire a society of free, responsible citizens and create an enabling environment for enterprise and growth.
He added that with the right governance frameworks, Nigeria still has the potential to rise and achieve greatness.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, who served as the Royal Father of the Day; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State and Samuel Ortom of Benue State, among others.
