Yaba Psychiatric Hospital MD Accused of Diverting Patients’ Food Funds

Some stakeholders at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos State, have petitioned anti-graft agencies, demanding a probe into alleged financial misconduct and administrative irregularities by the hospital’s Medical Director, Dr Olugbenga Owoeye.

In the petition signed by one Victor Ajasegun and obtained by our correspondent, the petitioners alleged that Owoeye had, over the past four years, mismanaged hospital funds, particularly those meant for patients’ welfare, and diverted patients to his private clinic.

The petition claimed that since his appointment, the hospital had witnessed a decline in service delivery, with decisions being made unilaterally and without stakeholder input.

They accused Owoeye of dismantling previously effective systems, including the administrative structure for patient feeding.

“Patients now suffer delays in meal service and poor food quality, despite payments made by their relatives,” the petition said, adding that the hospital owed food suppliers millions of naira.

According to the petitioners, Owoeye’s actions had led to infrastructural decay within the facility, including broken toilets, leaking pipes, and faulty electrical systems, posing risks to both patients and staff.

The group further alleged that the medical director used hospital inefficiencies to divert patients to his private hospital, First Health Specialist Clinic, located at Abule-Nla, Ebute Metta.

“He has created a referral network within the hospital to redirect patients for personal gain,” the petition read.

They urged anti-corruption agencies to investigate the matter and remove Owoeye from office to restore public confidence and improve patient care at the institution.
