A group of 31 young climate leaders has committed to planting 10,000 trees across Enugu State.
This ambitious endeavor was announced during a recent visit coordinated by Prof Chukwumerije Okereke to Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
The visit, a key component of the International Visitors’ Leadership Programme impact award bestowed upon Okereke by the U.S. Department of State Bureau for Education and Cultural Affairs, aimed to apprise the state government of the group’s vision to transform Enugu into a green and climate-resilient city.
Prof. Okereke, the driving force behind this eco-conscious movement, highlighted the comprehensive training program that led to the selection of these climate leaders.
From a pool of over 4,000 applicants, the 31 individuals underwent a rigorous training program covering climate change, urban greening, and air quality measurements.
During the visit, Okereke shared the outcomes of their initiatives, which included a two-day climate change training program and an urban greening workshop.
Notably, the group engaged over 7,000 children from three public secondary schools in Enugu in a climate education exercise.
Additionally, they planted over 100 economic and ornamental trees strategically throughout the city, symbolizing their commitment to a sustainable future.
Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, welcomed the young climate change leaders on behalf of Governor Peter Mbah.
Expressing the administration’s dedication to fostering a greener environment, Prof. Onyia affirmed the significance of such initiatives in aligning with broader environmental goals.
The pledge to plant 10,000 trees reflects a united effort to combat deforestation, enhance air quality, and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The young leaders envision a future where Enugu stands as a shining example of a city harmoniously coexisting with nature.
