$1 Would Have Reached N10,000 Without Divine Intervention — Adeboye
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has claimed that divine intervention averted a catastrophic freefall of the naira, which he suggested could have exchanged at N10,000 to the dollar.
Adeboye made the assertion during the Special Holy Ghost Congress in Abuja, attributing the naira’s relative stability to persistent prayers by himself and his congregation.
“The way the naira was declining, if God had not intervened, by now, $1 would be about N10,000. But God stepped in, showing us that we need prayers,” Adeboye said.
Currently, the naira trades at approximately N1,730 to a dollar, reflecting ongoing economic pressures in the country.
The cleric linked the currency’s depreciation to Nigeria’s heavy reliance on fuel imports, despite being a major oil-producing nation.
He lamented the billions spent on non-functional refineries, describing them as a significant burden on the nation’s economy.
“How can we be importing petrol when we have this resource in abundance here?” he asked.
Adeboye further criticised the removal of petrol subsidies, which initially sparked optimism but later led to economic instability as a “cabal” reportedly sabotaged reform efforts.
“They created problems, and suddenly, the naira began to decline rapidly,” he alleged.
Addressing the nation’s broader economic challenges, Adeboye stressed the need for divine assistance to complement human efforts. He urged Nigerians to acknowledge the shortcomings in governance and unite in seeking a turnaround.
“We need help — divine help — not human help. If we want restoration, we must first admit something is missing,” he said.
Nigeria is facing its worst economic crisis in decades, worsened by President Bola Tinubu’s decisions to end the petrol subsidy and float the naira.
These measures, aimed at fiscal consolidation, have provoked widespread economic hardship, including a steep rise in inflation and a weakened naira.
Adeboye’s remarks add to growing public discourse on the urgent need for holistic solutions to Nigeria’s economic woes, blending policy reforms with spiritual and collective action.
