In an impressive feat, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully recovered a staggering N70.56 billion within a 100-day period from October 2023 to January 19, 2024.
This was outlined in the recently obtained ‘Operations and Recoveries’ document.
The detailed report, accessed recently reveals that the EFCC’s efforts led to the recovery of N60.97 billion, $10.52 million, £150,002.10, and €4,119.90.
This substantial recovery underscores the commission’s unwavering commitment to combat financial crimes and promote transparency.
During this period, the EFCC received a total of 3,325 petitions, responding actively by accepting 2,657 of them.
Impressively, the commission secured convictions for 747 individuals involved in various financial crime offenses, including money laundering and internet fraud.
Breaking down the data, the EFCC headquarters played a pivotal role, recovering N49.61 billion, $3.90 million, £2000, and £110.
Regional commands across the nation also contributed significantly to the recovery, with Maiduguri, Gombe, Kano, Makurdi, Enugu, Uyo, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Kaduna, Ilorin, Abuja, Ibadan, Lagos, and Benin making notable strides.
EFCC Chairman Ola Okukoyede, in a dialogue in Abuja, disclosed that a majority of the 747 convictions were related to cybercrime offenses.
This revelation came during the EFCC event themed ‘Dialogue on Youth, Religion, and the Fight against Corruption’ held at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Federal Capital Territory.
Furthermore, Chairman Okukoyede seized the occasion to launch the Fraud Risk Assessment Project for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
This initiative underscores the EFCC’s proactive approach to fortify institutions against potential fraud risks, demonstrating a commitment to creating a corruption-free environment.
