No fewer than 176 residents abducted during the deadly February 3 attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have regained their freedom, the state government has announced.
The victims were kidnapped when armed terrorists invaded the two communities in one of the deadliest attacks recorded in the area earlier this year.
The Kwara State Government disclosed the development on Wednesday through a statement posted on its official Facebook page.
Expressing appreciation to those involved in securing the victims’ release, the government commended President Bola Tinubu, security agencies and other stakeholders for their efforts.
The statement read, “Alhamdulillaah and kudos to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, security forces, and everyone who played a role in this huge feat. We are grateful.”
Although the government did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the victims’ release or whether any ransom was paid, it described the development as a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in the state.
The February 3 attack on Woro and neighbouring Nuku communities sparked widespread outrage after scores of residents were abducted by heavily armed assailants, forcing many families to flee the affected communities.
The incident also heightened concerns over the growing wave of kidnappings and attacks in parts of Kwara North, particularly in Kaiama Local Government Area, where communities have repeatedly come under assault by criminal gangs.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement providing details of the operation that led to the victims’ freedom or confirming whether arrests were made.
The state government, however, said it remained committed to working with security agencies to strengthen the safety of lives and property across Kwara State.
