The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Cross River State, Dr Felix Archibong has said that no fewer than 18 doctors have been kidnapped in Cross River in the past eight years.
The Chairman who expressed worry, called for the government’s immediate intervention to address the rising issue of doctors’ abductions in the region.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the repeated abduction has led the medical community to temporarily suspend services, highlighting the urgent need for improved security measures and intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of doctors in the state.
Archibong said,“Eighteen doctors have been kidnapped in Cross River State in the past eight years.
“We have started calling on the government to come to our aid. So, what is the need of apportioning blame? There is no time for blame games. We did not just sit down to sustain our services.
“Something happened and they should start looking at the effects, look at the cost of this and we are calling out the government to do something.
“ We cried out some years ago when medical doctors were made targets for abduction and we thank God that the then governor responded and established an operation called Operation Akpakwu in the state and this thing died down.
“Probably, we want to believe that the operation has been dissolved because of the change in government and they (kidnappers) have come out again. So, we are still going to cry out to this new administration to do the needful”.
