Senator Tolu Odebiyi, who represented Ogun Weet from 2019 to 2023, has successfully overseen the completion of a vital infrastructure project – the 12km Joga-Ibese Road in the Yewa-North North local government area of Ogun state .
He explained that the project, with a total cost of N300 million, aimed at improving connectivity and addressing longstanding issues faced by the community.
Senator Odebiyi revealed that the allocation of funds for the project was a strategic decision, with the street lights alone requiring over N100 million and the road works consuming about N200 million.
Emphasizing his commitment to community development, Senator Odebiyi pointed out that the Joga-Ibese Road project was executed under his tenure, differentiating it from projects proposed by Senator Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, which are slated for the 2024 budget.
The senator, a resident of Iboro, highlighted the detrimental impact of heavy trucks from nearby cement industry on the rural road.
Expressing concerns about the road’s sustainability, he called on the state government to take ownership and implement legislation restricting heavy trucks to major roads.
Despite financial challenges, Senator Odebiyi said his persistent appeals to the federal government through key figures like Mr. Babatunde Fashola and Mr. Tunde Lemo resulted in funding support, leading to the initiation of the project in 2023, as opposed to the initially planned 2022 start.
Addressing the need for ongoing maintenance, Senator Odebiyi included street lighting provisions in his budget before leaving office, contributing to the road’s enhanced motorability.
However, he stressed the importance of continuous updates and called on the current Senator and the Ogun State government to prioritize the road’s sustainability.
In correspondence with Ogun State government and the current Senator, Senator Odebiyi advocated continued attention and budgetary allocation to ensure the road’s ongoing improvement.
He also acknowledged community efforts, mentioning discussions with the contractor regarding speed bumps and expressing willingness to address such community-driven initiatives.
PLATFORM TIMES observed that Senator Odebiyi’s dedication to the Joga-Ibese Road project underscores his commitment to the welfare of his constituency, with a focus on long-term sustainability and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
