88 Terrorists Killed, 228 Criminals Nabbed in Military Offensive—Defence HQ

In a week-long offensive targeting terrorist strongholds and criminal networks, the Nigerian military has neutralized 88 terrorists and arrested 228 criminals across various regions, military officials announced Thursday.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abuja.

He highlighted that intensified operations, particularly in the North West, aim to dismantle terror networks and mitigate insurgency across Nigeria.

Troops have increased their efforts in response to heightened threats, adjusting strategies to prevent terrorist escapes and cornering them in high-priority regions.

Buba also provided updates on counter-insurgency operations nationwide, noting the military’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for the upcoming Ondo gubernatorial election.

“Our increased operational tempo is geared towards obliterating all terror networks and eliminating groups posing security threats to the nation,” Buba stated.

In the South South, where criminal activities related to oil theft persist, troops made significant progress, arresting 40 suspects involved in illegal oil operations.

Authorities estimate that these efforts have prevented the theft of crude oil valued at approximately N1.02 billion.

Additionally, troops managed to rescue 181 hostages held by criminal gangs in the region.

Highlighting the scale of seizures from ongoing raids, Buba detailed an extensive list of recovered items, including 84 assorted weapons and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition.

Among the confiscated arms were 34 AK-47 rifles, 15 fabricated rifles, 11 Dane guns, five revolver pistols, and various locally made firearms.

Also recovered were critical tactical assets and communication tools used by criminals, including 16 vehicles, 35 motorcycles, and 27 mobile phones.

Authorities further seized N1.85 million in cash and two Baofeng radios, underscoring the military’s effort to cripple the logistical capabilities of these groups.

The breakdown of ammunition recovered included 1,807 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 314 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 146 rounds of PKM ammo, and 49 live cartridges.

The ongoing military offensive is part of a broader security strategy aimed at curbing violence, protecting national assets, and ensuring stability in volatile regions.
