The Federal Government has suspended senior officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) following allegations of bribery involving controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the move is aimed at facilitating thorough investigations into the bribery accusations and ensuring transparency in the process.
The suspension stems from a viral video posted by popular blogger Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.
In the video, Otse alleged that officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) collected ₦15 million from Bobrisky to drop money laundering charges against him.
The allegations came after Bobrisky’s public naira spraying incident in April, which resulted in a six-month prison sentence.
The blogger further accused the crossdresser of paying additional millions to secure preferential treatment during his incarceration.
Bobrisky, however, has vehemently denied these allegations, while both the EFCC and NCoS have launched investigations into the claims.
In response to the viral accusations, the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board released a statement on Thursday, announcing the suspension of several high-ranking NCoS officials.
The statement, signed by Ja’afaru Ahmed, indicated that the suspension of the officers was necessary to allow for an unhindered investigation.
“The suspension of these officers is to enable a thorough investigation into the allegations, and the outcome will be made public upon conclusion,” the statement read.
The suspended officers include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kirikiri, Lagos State, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) at Kirikiri, Lagos.
In addition, the Board suspended ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, serving at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the facility without proper authorization.
Another officer, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kuje, Abuja, was also suspended for reportedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
The government’s actions underscore its commitment to tackling corruption within the correctional system, as investigations continue into the matter.
The suspensions serve as a stern reminder that misconduct among prison officials will not be tolerated, especially in high-profile cases such as Bobrisky’s.
