Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved the construction of 12 blocks of smart classrooms in four schools across the state, as part of his administration’s drive to modernize the educational sector.
The initiative, which includes 900 state-of-the-art classrooms, will be implemented in Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta; Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode; Remo Secondary School, Sagamu; and Yewa College, Ilaro.
Governor Abiodun made this announcement during the 2024 Teachers’ Day celebration, held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, on Saturday, October 5.
The governor declared Monday, October 7, a public holiday for teachers to mark their contributions to the growth of education in the state.
In a significant move, the governor revealed the absorption of 1,000 interns from the OgunTeach scheme into the State Teaching Service Commission.
The OgunTeach initiative, aimed at addressing teacher shortages, has been lauded for its role in enhancing the quality of education delivery in the state.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abiodun emphasized the critical role of education in fostering socio-political and economic development.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers, announcing that transport allowances would now be paid to all public school teachers in place of the work-free days currently enjoyed by other state government workers.
The governor, while addressing the challenges faced by teachers, expressed the administration’s resolve to continue investing in the education sector.
“We believe that education is the bedrock of any meaningful socio-political and economic development, and teachers are the architects of that foundation,” he said.
Citing Nelson Mandela’s famous quote on education as a powerful weapon for change, Abiodun assured teachers of the government’s unrelenting support under the ‘Building Our Future Together’ Agenda.
He added that the state has been committed to improving teachers’ salaries, funding training programs, and ensuring that classrooms are equipped with modern teaching tools.
The Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, also commended the governor for aligning the administration’s policies with the theme of this year’s Teachers’ Day celebration.
He noted that the governor’s interventions are setting the stage for a new social order, not just in the education sector, but in Ogun State as a whole.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Felix Agbesanwa, expressed gratitude for the government’s recruitment of more teachers through the OgunTeach scheme.
He highlighted the administration’s efforts in renovating schools and instilling discipline in the education system by ensuring that parents and students sign undertakings.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Sewakanu Oladipupo, acknowledged the United Nations’ designation of Teachers’ Day as a day to honor educators.
He praised the Ogun State government for prioritizing the welfare of teachers despite the current economic challenges.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Lekan Ifede, described Ogun teachers as the best in the country, while the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, applauded Governor Abiodun for the substantial investments in the state’s education sector over the past five years.
