The Ogun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, has announced plans to implement new measures aimed at curbing rising criminal activities along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the initiative was in a bid to strengthen security across Ogun State’s borders and ensure the safety of its citizens.
The initiative, which will also bolster economic growth by fostering a safer environment, was disclosed by the State Commander, Brigadier-General Alade Adedigba (Rtd.), during a stakeholder meeting held in Ogere.
A statement by the Press Officer, Wale Olanrewaju, stated that the meeting, which took place at the palace of the Ologere of Ogere, Oba James Obafemi Saliu, saw community leaders, law enforcement officials, and traditional chiefs in attendance.
The statement further read that Brig-Gen. Adedigba stressed the critical need for proactive measures to tackle security challenges, particularly kidnapping and robbery incidents, which have increasingly plagued the Lagos-Ibadan corridor and border communities such as Ogere.
“Given the persistent security issues along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and Ogere axis, it has become crucial for us to implement comprehensive strategies that not only safeguard our people but also create a conducive environment for economic prosperity in these areas and the state as a whole,” said Adedigba.
“One of the key initiatives announced by the Commander is the formation of a Security Marshals program, which will consist of trained volunteers from local communities.
“ These marshals will collaborate with the Amotekun Corps and other security agencies to provide surveillance and quick responses to security threats in border areas.
“We believe that local residents possess valuable knowledge of their environments, and their involvement will not only empower them but also enhance the effectiveness of our security operations.
“ The Security Marshals will serve as the eyes and ears of the community, enabling us to respond swiftly to any potential threats,” Adedigba explained.
In addition to the recruitment of marshals, the Amotekun Corps will receive further support from the Ogun State government, which plans to increase personnel, procure more patrol vehicles, and equip the security outfit with advanced communication gadgets to improve its operational efficiency.
The Executive Secretary of the Ologere-in-Council, Otunba Adeolu Idowu, lauded the new security initiative, noting that it is a step towards greater cooperation between residents and law enforcement agencies.
He stressed that local involvement in security operations would foster trust and ensure that communities remain safe from crime.
“We need to feel secure in our homes and communities, and by engaging locals in these efforts, we are promoting a safer environment.
This initiative is a positive step towards crime prevention and greater security for all,” Idowu remarked.
He also called on residents to support the security agencies by providing timely and relevant information that could help prevent criminal activities in their communities.
