The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved a revised training curriculum for all police recruits.
The updated curriculum is designed to address critical areas of modern policing, aligning the force with international best practices and preparing recruits to meet the complex challenges of law enforcement in Nigeria.
Among the key topics introduced in the revised curriculum are the Police Act 2020, the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy, and training on harassment and gender-based crimes.
Other areas include sex education, anti-corruption laws, and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act.
The curriculum also covers election security, public relations, computer studies, artificial intelligence, and attitudinal and behavioral changes, among others.
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the new training regime reflects the IGP’s commitment to intellectual and capacity building within the force.
“This new training curriculum, when fully implemented, would prepare the recruits for the challenges to be faced in the course of policing a complex society like Nigeria, and how to best execute their duties in line with international best practices,” he said.
With the integration of courses like social media usage and sex education, the curriculum aims to equip recruits with the necessary skills for responsible conduct both online and in public life.
It also addresses pressing issues like gender mainstreaming, cybercrime, and human relations—critical areas often overlooked in previous police training programs.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to continuous improvement and sensitization of its officers, ensuring that they are not only well-trained but also equipped with the prerequisite knowledge and skills required to effectively meet the high demands of policing,” ACP Adejobi added.
He emphasized that the training overhaul aligns with the IGP’s vision of building a community-oriented force that operates within the bounds of the law and with the full collaboration of relevant stakeholders.
The new curriculum underscores the police leadership’s resolve to modernize the force, ensuring that new recruits are better prepared for the evolving demands of their role.
The focus on public conduct, election security, and combating cybercrime highlights the force’s recognition of the rapidly changing societal landscape in Nigeria, where the role of the police is more critical than ever.
