A labourer, identified as Sunday Emmanuel, allegedly murdered his wife, Linda Emmanuel, and attempted to kill his three-year-old son in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The attack reportedly took place on October 7, 2024, around 5:30 a.m. at Ogbeni Camp, in the Ofosu area of the local government.

According to a police report, Emmanuel fatally attacked his wife, slashing her neck and cheek with a machete during a dispute over their family’s annual wages.

Following the brutal assault, Emmanuel allegedly turned on his young son, also named Sunday, striking the toddler’s head in an apparent attempt to end his life.

The child sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently battling for survival.

Emmanuel, who is now in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, was arraigned on Tuesday at an Ondo State Magistrates’ Court.

The police prosecutor, Josephine Awanna, informed the court that Emmanuel faces two serious charges: murder and attempted murder.

The charge sheet read in court described the horrifying details of the alleged offences:

“That you, Sunday Emmanuel, on October 7, 2024, at about 5:30 a.m. at Ogbeni Camp via Ofosu, in the Ondo Magistraterial District, did unlawfully kill one Linda Emmanuel, 35, by macheting her on the neck and cheek.

“ That you, Sunday Emmanuel, on the same date, time, and place, unlawfully attempted with the intention to kill your son, aged 3, by macheting him on the head.”

These charges are in violation of sections 319 (1) and 320 (1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
