Ogun State Labour Party has officially launched its campaign for the 2024 Local Government Election, with state chairman Lukman Abiodun Jagun leading a rallying call for change.
Speaking at a press conference, Jagun stressed that the Labour Party’s mission to revamp governance at the grassroots level in Ogun State, promising a new era focused on infrastructural development, agricultural progress, primary healthcare, and transparency.
Addressing an audience that included the party’s former governorship candidate Dr. Kehinde Sogunle, party senatorial leaders, local government candidates, and supporters, Jagun painted the Labour Party as the answer to Ogun’s challenges.
“We are not here to merely criticise the ruling party, but to offer real, practical solutions,” Jagun said.
“Our aim is to transform local governments into hubs of development, transparency, and accountability, focused on the people’s welfare.”
Jagun described the party’s objectives as addressing foundational issues often overlooked by local administrations.
“Ogun’s local governments should be centres of development and service delivery,” he said.
“However, citizens continue to face a shortage of essentials like good roads, drainage systems, clean water, and quality education.
The Labour Party aims to reverse this trend, making people’s needs the priority.”
Jagun highlighted four pillars as the foundation of the party’s campaign which he listed as ; Infrastructural Development, Agricultural Revolution, Primary Healthcare Services and Transparency and Accountability.
He emphasised that the Labour Party has “the candidates, ideas, vision, and passion” to bring these goals to reality, advocating for leaders “who are accountable, responsive, and ready to serve.”
The Labour Party also expressed concerns about potential election manipulation by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting that the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) may act in APC’s favour.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that six of the party’s chairmanship candidates and numerous councillorship candidates have reportedly withdrawn due to fears of electoral malpractice.
Despite these challenges, Jagun affirmed that fourteen chairmanship candidates and 104 councillorship candidates would contest the elections, naming candidates for each local government area.
He accused the APC of fostering “hunger, poverty, and suffering” across Ogun, citing rising food prices and a lack of essential services as evidence of failed governance.
“Prices of basic food items are now beyond reach for most families.
“ Ogun State has abundant arable land, yet food insecurity continues to escalate,” he asserted.
“Where are the promised food banks, social welfare programs, and infrastructure developments?”
Jagun called on the OGSIEC Chairman and the state governor to prioritise the people’s will, urging them to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
“The OGSIEC Chairman has a golden opportunity to uphold democracy,” he stated.
“The people of Ogun deserve an election that reflects their true voice.”
