A UK-based Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur, Oluwapelumi Olayinka, has embarked on a mission to promote Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage through the global celebration of Adire fabric.

Olayinka, the founder of Ektaktos Collectibles, is dedicated to elevating the traditional textile by transforming it into a contemporary fashion statement designed to resonate with diverse audiences across the United Kingdom, Canada, and beyond.

In an interview with our correspondent on Thursday, Olayinka, who is also a theatre practitioner and member of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, explained her passion for Adire.

“Adire is more than just a fabric; it is a symbol of our cultural legacy,” she said. “I am driven to make this traditional craft accessible and fashionable for a global audience.”

Olayinka emphasized that Adire, which has a history spanning centuries, showcases the craftsmanship and artistry of Nigerian artisans.

Each piece tells a unique story, passed down through generations, reflecting the deep cultural heritage embedded in the textile.

“It is not just about promoting sales,” Olayinka added. “It’s about sparking conversations around our heritage and inspiring others to embrace it.”

Over the past four years, Olayinka has showcased the beauty of Adire through Ektaktos Collectibles, her fashion brand which offers a range of ready-to-wear clothing integrating traditional designs with modern trends.

From elegant formal wear to casual loungewear and stylish swimsuits, each item highlights the vibrancy and depth of Nigerian culture.

“What sets Ektaktos Collectibles apart is its commitment to quality and artistry,” she explained.

“My keen eye for detail and dedication to preserving the cultural significance of Adire has enabled my brand to stand out in the fashion industry.”

Beyond her fashion endeavors, Olayinka’s commitment to cultural advocacy extends into theatre. In 2021, she produced her first stage play, Wives and Mothers, a drama that delves into complex family dynamics within African societies.

Debuting at the Obasanjo Presidential Library auditorium in Abeokuta, the production received acclaim for its exploration of family relationships and Olayinka’s ability to blend storytelling with cultural advocacy.

“Wives and Mothers is about blending storytelling with cultural advocacy,” Olayinka stated.

“It promotes cultural exchange and understanding through theatre and art, resonating with audiences globally.”

Through her combined work in fashion and theatre, Olayinka’s efforts reflect a broader commitment to preserving and celebrating Nigerian culture on the world stage.
