The Ogun State chapter of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on all eligible voters to actively participate in the upcoming local government election, scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024, while stressing the need for a fair and peaceful electoral process.
The appeal was made in a statement signed by MURIC’s State Chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Alao, and issued by the State Secretary, Alhaji Olaleye Rasheed.
MURIC described the election as a critical opportunity for citizens to shape leadership at the grassroots level.
The group urged Ogun residents not to be discouraged by concerns over potential rigging, asserting that significant measures have been put in place to address such fears.
“We encourage everyone to exercise their democratic rights, as each vote contributes to strengthening civic power,” the statement read. “Abstaining from voting only undermines our collective voice.”
The group called on the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to ensure impartiality, warning that any signs of bias could harm public trust and compromise democratic integrity.
“OGSIEC must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to fairness and transparency,” MURIC stated.
MURIC also urged security agencies to act with professionalism and neutrality, emphasizing that safeguarding voters’ rights is essential for a peaceful electoral environment.
“Ensuring safety while respecting voters’ rights is paramount,” the group stressed, urging security personnel to avoid actions that could intimidate or discourage voters.
In addition, MURIC appealed to Ogun residents to reject violence and not to fall prey to politicians seeking to incite unrest for personal gain.
“We must prioritize collective peace and stability, rejecting those who may attempt to destabilize the process for selfish reasons,” MURIC cautioned.
The statement concluded by reaffirming MURIC’s commitment to supporting a transparent and accountable electoral system that respects the will of the people.
“Let us uphold democratic values by turning out to vote and protecting the integrity of the process,” the group urged.
