Operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command have apprehended a 32-year-old man, Balogun Olamide Yusuf, for allegedly defrauding a visa seeker, Mrs. Kolawole Olorunjuwon, of N11 million under the guise of securing a Canadian visa.
Yusuf, who posed as a travel agent, reportedly collected the money from the victim but failed to fulfill his promise. Instead, he allegedly converted the funds for personal use and went into hiding.
Following a petition by Mrs. Olorunjuwon to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, operatives of the Zone 2 Command launched an investigation, which led to Yusuf’s arrest at a hideout in Lagos.
The suspect was subsequently arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting in Tinubu, Lagos Island, on a three-count charge of impersonation, theft, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
According to the prosecuting counsel, ASP Francis Igbinosa, the alleged crimes occurred between September 2023 and July 2024 across Lagos and Ogun states. He revealed that Yusuf, after receiving the money, became unreachable and switched off his phones.
The charges against the suspect were filed under Sections 168(1)(b), 314, and 280(1)(b) of the Lagos State Criminal Law, 2015.
Magistrate Sodiq Bello granted Yusuf bail in the sum of N3 million with two sureties of the same amount. However, he ordered that the suspect remain in custody at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
The court adjourned the case to January 2025 for mention.
