The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing an unidentified woman allegedly swapping the ATM card of a 58-year-old physically challenged woman and withdrawing a total of N2 million from her account in Nnewi.
In a statement on Tuesday, the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the command has commenced a probe into the incident and called on residents of Nnewi and its environs to provide information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspect disguised herself to assist the victim at the ATM. She swapped the victim’s card and left the spot.
“Moments later, the victim, a quinquagenarian, received multiple debit alerts amounting to N2 million,” Ikenga said.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the suspect executed the withdrawals in parts, likely to avoid detection.
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has expressed concern over the incident and directed the Public Relations Office to contact the victim for further details to aid the investigation.
The commissioner also instructed the command to deploy its intelligence-gathering tools to uncover the identity of the suspect and any accomplices.
The police urged members of the public, especially those familiar with the incident or the suspect, to come forward with information that could facilitate her arrest and prosecution.
This incident highlights growing concerns about the safety of vulnerable individuals at ATMs and the increasing sophistication of fraudsters.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding residents against criminal activities.
