Can you introduce yourself?
I am David Adepoju, a recent graduate of the Department of Mathematics at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State. I emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student at the just-concluded 9th FUOYE convocation ceremony, graduating with a CGPA of 4.87/5.0.
What was your reaction when you found out you were the best graduating student?
It was a Wednesday afternoon during an NYSC-SAED class when my phone started buzzing with calls from lecturers.
Eventually checking WhatsApp, I saw a message from the examination officer announcing I was the Overall Best Graduating Student. Overwhelmed with joy, I immediately shared the news with my mother, who sang praises for over five minutes.
What sacrifices did you make to achieve this academic feat?
Trekking long distances for early morning classes in my 100 level days and sacrificing sleep during exam periods were major challenges. Staying on campus instead of going home during holidays to prepare for upcoming semesters was another sacrifice.
Were there moments you felt like giving up?
Yes, especially during my frustrated 400 level first semester. Encouragement from friends, executives, and my roommate, coupled with divine grace, kept me going.
How would you describe your journey in one word?
Faith-filled. My faith in Christ Jesus has been the cornerstone of my academic and personal life.
How did your faith influence your academic journey?
Believing that God’s grace made all achievements possible was pivotal. My academic success was a testament to His excellence.
Any advice for students balancing spirituality and academics?
Prioritize academic excellence with the understanding that God supports your success. Maintain focus and discipline in your studies and spiritual life.
What was your toughest academic challenge in mathematics?
Mastering theorems and proofs in analytical courses like Real Analysis and Topology was challenging. Early preparation and using past questions helped me overcome these hurdles.
Have you faced academic setbacks?
Yes, receiving a B in my final semester after maintaining perfect GPAs and losing the FSB scholarship in 2022 were disappointments. However, persistence paid off when I received the MTN Foundation scholarship in 2023.
Any regrets from your undergraduate years?
I wish I had taken my relationship with God more seriously and executed entrepreneurial ideas earlier.
Beyond academics, what legacy do you hope to leave?
I aim to be remembered for mentoring students, impacting my department, school, and fellowship, and promoting academic growth.
Advice for struggling students?
Change your approach to study, seek knowledge, apply it diligently, and believe in your capabilities.
What’s the greatest lesson FUOYE taught you?
Success requires both knowledge and networking—God and man are indispensable.
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a postgraduate degree in Mathematical Epidemiology or Data Science and contribute to SDG 4 (Quality Education) through academic excellence initiatives.
