Lagos Assembly Controversy: Bode George Criticizes Reinstatement Of Obasa As Speaker

Bode George, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly condemned the Lagos State House of Assembly’s decision to reinstate Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker.

Obasa, who faced serious allegations of financial misconduct leading to his initial removal, was reinstated amidst criticism from George, who labeled the move as a “disregard for due process.”

In an exclusive interview with The Tribune, George accused the Assembly of operating more like a “private enterprise” than a democratic institution.

He raised significant concerns about the lack of transparency in Obasa’s reinstatement, questioning why the allegations against him were not properly addressed before his return to office.

“If you are accused of certain misdemeanors publicly, and there’s a process initiated against you, shouldn’t you have to address those accusations before being reinstated?” George questioned, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and accountability.

The veteran politician expressed dismay over what he perceived as a unilateral decision-making process within the Assembly, suggesting that democratic principles were compromised in the process.

“It appears that a single individual wields excessive control over the Assembly’s affairs, making decisions akin to hiring and firing at will,” George remarked, highlighting concerns about the erosion of democratic norms.

Furthermore, George criticized the Assembly members who supported Obasa’s reinstatement, questioning whether they had adequately considered the gravity of the allegations previously made against him.

“Returning someone to office without addressing serious accusations sends the wrong message about accountability and governance,” he added.
