President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday issued a firm directive to Nigeria’s security chiefs, ordering them to immediately curb the resurgence of violent attacks in parts of the country, particularly in Plateau, Borno, and Benue states.
Speaking during a high-level security meeting at the State House in Abuja, the President declared that the current wave of insecurity must be brought to an end, saying “enough is enough.”
In attendance at the closed-door meeting were National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Mohammed Mohammed; Chief of Defence Intelligence, Emmanuel Undiandeye; Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Ajayi; and the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, NSA Ribadu said President Tinubu was unequivocal in his instruction that the nation’s security architecture must respond swiftly and effectively to the renewed violence in affected states.
“He (Tinubu) said enough is enough. He directed us to work closely with the subnational governments — the governors, the local authorities, and communities — to bring a lasting solution,” Ribadu stated.
The NSA noted that Wednesday’s meeting allowed for a comprehensive briefing of the President on the current security situation nationwide. According to him, it was also a chance to receive “new instructions” from the Commander-in-Chief.
“Insecurity is not only a federal government challenge,” Ribadu added. “It involves collaboration with communities, local governments, and especially state governments. Some of the root causes are local, and we need to tackle them from the grassroots.”
He assured Nigerians that the administration is not relenting in its efforts to ensure peace and stability across the country, stressing that the President is deeply committed to restoring order.
While commenting on the latest attacks in Borno, Ribadu explained that terrorists had taken advantage of the relative peace in the state to plant explosives in isolated incidents aimed at destabilising the region.
“This enemy does not give up easily,” he said. “When there’s calm for too long, they resort to shocking attacks to spread fear.”
Despite the challenges, Ribadu maintained that there has been “significant improvement” in the country’s overall security landscape, though it is not yet at an ideal level.
His comments come amid renewed violence in Plateau, where several lives have been lost in recent weeks. In Benue, over 50 people were killed in attacks on Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas on April 18, raising fresh concerns about the safety of rural communities.
The President’s latest directive signals a renewed urgency at the federal level to stem the tide of insecurity and prevent further loss of lives across the country.
