An exclusive investigation by PLATFORM TIMES has revealed that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State received a total of ₦539.04 billion in net federal allocations between May 2019 and April 2025, covering six budget cycles under his stewardship.
Data obtained from BudgIT, a civic technology organization focused on fiscal transparency, indicates a steady increase in the state’s monthly receipts from the Federation Account despite national economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and global oil price fluctuations.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that a breakdown of the disbursements shows a consistent upward trajectory:
2025 (Jan–Apr): ₦61.36 billion
2024: ₦152.94 billion
2023: ₦97.67 billion
2022: ₦69.87 billion
2021: ₦66.81 billion
2020: ₦54.13 billion
2019 (May–Dec): ₦36.27 billion
The year 2024 saw the highest single-year allocation, with a record ₦152.94 billion disbursed to the state, while the lowest was recorded in 2019, when ₦36.27 billion was received during Makinde’s first eight months in office.
The revelations have sparked renewed calls for transparency and accountability in public finance management in the state. Policy experts argue that the inflow of over half a trillion naira demands greater scrutiny of the government’s budget implementation and capital project execution.
“Over half a trillion naira has entered Oyo’s account. Citizens deserve to know what this money has achieved — in roads, education, hospitals, and job creation,” said Dr. Azeez Adeyemi, an Ibadan-based public policy analyst.
Dr. Adeyemi noted that while federal allocations are critical to state development, the impact is only measurable through transparent reporting and independent tracking of projects.
Similarly, public finance advocates have called on the Makinde administration to publish detailed annual budget performance reports and institute community-level monitoring frameworks for capital projects.
“The people need more than figures. They need proof that these funds are working for them,” said a representative of a local civil society coalition monitoring budget implementation in Oyo.
Governor Makinde, who is serving his second term, has repeatedly pledged to run an open and people-focused government.
However, civil society groups insist that transparency must go beyond rhetoric and be reflected in how public funds are reported and utilized.
