The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians to avoid specific Dove-branded hand soaps and deodorants, citing health risks posed by a banned chemical substance found in the products.
In a public alert released on Saturday, NAFDAC said the affected products contain Butylphenyl Methylpropional, also known as 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propanaldehyde—a substance linked to skin irritation and potential harm to unborn children.
The agency’s statement, titled “Alert on the Ban of Dove Hand and Deodorant Soap due to Butylphenyl Methylpropional Contamination”, listed several products implicated in the health warning. These include:Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (Barcode: 8710447439227) ; Dove Go Fresh Deodorant 50ml (Batch: 9212174) ;Dove Invisible Dry Deodorant 50ml (Batch: 9183646) and Dove Men+Care Silver Control Spray 150ml (Batch: 62867LD)
NAFDAC clarified that the products, already banned by the European Union, are not registered for sale in Nigeria, and fall under the nation’s list of prohibited and restricted imports.
“Importation of soaps is prohibited in Nigeria as per the restricted and import prohibition list,” the agency stated. “Furthermore, soaps and cosmetics are items ineligible for foreign exchange for importation.”
NAFDAC urged importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise “caution and vigilance” in order to prevent these products from entering or circulating in Nigerian markets.
“Members of the public who may be in possession of these products are advised to discontinue their sale or use and immediately submit the stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the alert read.
The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and called on citizens to report any adverse reactions from cosmetic products through NAFDAC’s Med Safety App or via email.
The development comes amid growing international scrutiny of cosmetic safety standards, with regulators in Europe and beyond cracking down on harmful ingredients in everyday products.
NAFDAC assured the public that it would continue to enforce safety regulations and monitor the market to ensure consumer protection.
