Fubara, Wike Make First Public Appearance After Tinubu-Brokered Truce

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Saturday, made their first public appearance together since their political face-off was resolved by President Bola Tinubu.

The duo, whose feud had rocked the political landscape of Rivers State for months, were seen at a burial ceremony held in Rumuepirikom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area—the hometown of the FCT Minister.

Also present at the event was the suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, an ally of Wike and a key player in the political crisis that threatened to divide the state’s power structure.

The outing marks a significant moment since Tinubu’s intervention in late 2023, which saw the warring factions agree to a fragile peace accord aimed at stabilising the state and preventing a full-blown political breakdown.

Though no official statements were made by either Fubara or Wike during the event, their joint presence in a non-political setting is being interpreted by observers as a possible signal of easing tensions—or at least a tactical ceasefire.

The reconciliation pact brokered by Tinubu followed a dramatic period that included the demolition of the state assembly complex, the resignation of key cabinet members, and a fierce battle for control of the legislature.

Fubara and Wike, once allies, fell out shortly after Fubara assumed office, with both camps accusing each other of betrayal and power grabs.

Saturday’s appearance has sparked renewed interest in the state’s political future, especially as stakeholders watch closely to see if the peace will hold or prove merely ceremonial.

More developments are expected as the 2027 general elections draw nearer and political alignments begin to shift once again.

Photos from the event are below.
