Presidency Denies Akume’s Sack, Labels Replacement Rumour As Fake News

The Presidency has firmly dismissed widespread speculation suggesting that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has been removed from office and replaced.

In the past 24 hours, a flurry of social media posts claimed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had appointed Hadiza Bala Usman, the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, as the new SGF.

However, the Presidency, through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, debunked the report on Saturday night, describing it as completely false and the handiwork of “mischief makers.”

“There has been no change in the status of His Excellency, Senator George Akume, as Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” Onanuga said in a statement.

He further clarified that President Tinubu, who is currently in Saint Lucia on official assignment, has not made any new appointments.

“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue. Agents of mischief fabricated it,” Onanuga stated, urging the public to ignore what he described as fake news.

Senator Akume, a former Governor of Benue State and seasoned politician, was appointed SGF in June 2023 and remains a key figure in Tinubu’s administration.
