Mob Strips Pastor, Woman Naked Over Alleged Affair In Edo Community

A mob in Iguomon community, located in the outskirts of Benin City, Edo State, on Monday, stripped a man believed to be a pastor and a married woman naked over allegations of infidelity.

In a video that has since gone viral on social media, angry youths were seen dragging the duo out of a private residence, accusing them of engaging in an illicit affair.

The man, said to be a pastor whose identity remains unknown as of press time, was completely stripped and forced to sit on the bare floor.

Eyewitnesses told PLATFORM TIMES that the woman, also unidentified, had allegedly been involved in a secret relationship with the pastor for some time before they were caught in the act.

The mob, including some women, humiliated the pair, with one female member of the group reportedly taking the lead in stripping the woman. Onlookers filmed the spectacle, while a large crowd gathered at the scene, some cheering and jeering at the victims.

Reacting to the incident, Edo-based human rights activist and convener of the Talakawa Parliament, Marxist Kola Edokpayi, condemned the mob action. He described the act as jungle justice and urged communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“We condemn jungle justice in its entirety,” Edokpayi said in a statement. “What happened in Iguomon cannot be justified.

The proper thing would have been to report the matter to the police for due investigation and lawful action.”

He warned that mob justice often leads to unintended fatalities and undermines the rule of law.

As of the time of filing this report, the Edo State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the incident. Efforts to contact community leaders in Iguomon for further comments were unsuccessful.

The incident has sparked mixed reactions online, with many calling for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in the public humiliation. Others argue it reflects deepening moral and social tensions within communities in the state.
