The Federal Government has issued a flood alert in 38 locations across 11 states, warning residents to brace for heavy rainfall expected between Wednesday, July 16, and Sunday, July 20, 2025.
The warning, issued through the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, forecasts intense downpours that could lead to flooding in vulnerable communities across northern and southern regions.
According to the official alert signed by the Director of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Bokani, the affected states include Adamawa (Mubi), Akwa Ibom (Edor, Upenekang, Oron, Eket), Borno (Ngala, Maiduguri), Bauchi (Azare, Itas, Jama’are, Kafin-Madaki, Jama’a, Kari, Misau), Plateau (Jos, Bukuru, Mangu), Yobe (Jakusko, Machina, Dapchi), Katsina (Daura), Kano (Kunchi, Gezawa, Wudil, Bebeji, Sumaila, Tudun Wada), Jigawa (Miga, Gwaram, Diginsa, Ringim, Dutse), Cross River (Calabar, Akpap), and Zamfara (Bungudu, Gusau).
The Ministry advised residents in these areas to remain vigilant and adopt safety measures to protect lives and property. It also urged local governments and emergency agencies to activate flood response protocols.
The alert comes amid growing concerns over climate-induced disasters in Nigeria. Just last month, the Federal Government commenced discussions on a National Flood Insurance Policy to address the recurring menace of flooding.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Environment Ministry, Mahmud Kambari, who was represented by Deputy Director Kunle Awojemila, described the nation’s flood situation as a national emergency.
He attributed the frequency and severity of flooding to climate change, rapid urbanisation, and decaying infrastructure, stressing the need for proactive measures.
“The proposed insurance scheme aims to provide financial protection for affected citizens and communities, reduce the burden on government emergency funding, and promote shared responsibility among all levels of government and the private sector,” Awojemila stated.
With Nigeria recording one of its deadliest flood disasters in 2022, experts say the implementation of flood risk strategies and insurance schemes is now more urgent than ever.
Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid risky movements during the forecasted period.
